Inside the Studio
The Christmas season was pretty magical for most of us when we were kids. Our parents bought our gifts for other people and put our names on them. No shopping pressure. It was all about imagining reindeer landing on the roof, sparkly lights and getting a new toy. And cookies.
As adults the troubles of the world intrude on this wondrous time. We are also pretty sure that magical reindeer will not show up. :(
On top of the pressures of hosting parties and gift-buying and travel that are a part of any holiday there is an extra stress. It’s really hard to feel carefree and celebratory when there are so many people at war and forced to leave their homes and countries. It makes us sad and angry and afraid that there are people who think hurting and killing others will make the world into their idea of a utopia. Not to mention the increasing destruction of the planet itself. And we feel like there is little we can do; the the world is so big and so messed up.
We can certainly each do our part to live sustainably on the planet. We can even give time and money to organizations that directly help others and work for justice and peace. These actions are important.
But the most powerful things we can do are to be decent and kind to each other in every moment. This is powerful for those around us and powerful for ourselves. It is the central message of every great world teacher.
When we treat each other with gentleness and tolerance we give each other the space we need to be our best. We help each other evolve into better beings. Gentleness is the weapon of the true warrior. “It takes strength to be gentle and kind” (The Smiths had it goin’ on).
Next time we hear about something terrible happening in the world and we start to get scared or angry or want to give up, we can remember our warrior attitude and feel the strength it gives us to be compassionate. Then we can do it so often that we realize we aren’t scared and sad anymore. That we have changed and we have changed the world. Then every day can sparkle with the holiday magicalness.

Bishi and Elektra’s Blanket Statement
"Here is our Christmas poem
We don't know alot about Xmas
But there's usually snow in the street
We like to be home
So we'll stay at home
And hopefully get lots of treats
Merry Christmas from Us"
See you all in class.
Namaste
